Guitars and technology.

Posted by scottfrein on May 17, 2008

The marriage of guitars and technology was inevitable. The advent of the first guitar synth to recording software to modeling amps to modeling guitars has been a logical road. As much as we all love the magical experience of the wood and steel of the guitar coming to life in our hands, that experience has evolved to include the one’s and zero’s of the digital age.

This is fine in the context that the digital gear is the stuff that is used to make the music. It is what we do. It’s what the instrument manufacturers do. What I don’t get is this. Gibson making computer hardware. Ok, probably not making but marketing computer hardware.

I love Gibson, don’t get me wrong. I play a Les Paul religiously. But I don’t want an awkward to use USB drive that looks like a Les Paul. How about an external hard drive with the brand name on it. Uh.. I guess. These probably look like great ideas for someone who wants to buy a guitar player a gift but I don’t know that I need that.

Let’s all come to an agreement. No more guitar companies making computer hardware, and Dell, Apple, and HP won’t make guitars.
