Free software for musicians

Posted by scottfrein on December 6, 2008

In these tough economic times everyone needs all the help they can get.  A great deal at the local big box guitar shop or a great pawn shop find is good but how about something for free. I have found some cool software for musicians and it’s all free.

Audacity is a free, audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems. Audacity can be used to record audio, convert analog media (tapes,LP’s) to digital, edit, mix, splice, as well as change speed and pitch.  Find out more in the list of features.

MP3 recorder is a free program that will record or re-record anything that is playing through the speakers on your computer.  This is helpful for capturing streaming audio or hard to convert file types.

So how about some plugins.  Visit www.hitsquad.com for some free plugins. They have VST,DXi, and AU as well as many other freeware and shareware applications.

BTE audio has some free plugins for you as well. They have the TS Secret as well as the Jucy 77 high gain preamp

CD burner XP Pro is a free CD burning program. It can burn any Data on all formats of CD and DVD (CD-R /CD-RW / DVD+R / DVD-R / DVD+RW / DVD-RW, including double layer, Blu-Ray discs and HD-DVDs. It also burns ISO files and audio discs.

How about some gadgets. I have most of the basics here.

Or try Guitar Instructor which has all of the above listed in one package.

This last piece of software is simple but will help you tighten up your mixes.

The Analog X Delay Calculator converts BPM to milliseconds so you can dial your delay and reverb times to match the tempo of the song.

These are only some of the many freeware/shareware programs geared toward musicians. While they may not be as feature rich as the commercially available packages, many of us will do just fine with these.
