Making a difference with music.

We all get caught up in our day to day lives.  The ups and downs that directly effect us and our own families.  With such hectic times and so many families struggling it is hard to step away from our own situation to see how good we may really have it.  It is our responsibility as humans to help each other out.  With so many in need of help it is hard to pick a path and make charitable contributions.

As a musician I thought it would be a good idea to look into some of the ways that you can help through music related charities.

The Guitar Center Music Foundation is dedicated to helping people participate in music.  With music in our classrooms dwindling  each year it is important to keep students and people of all ages involved in music.

There are many studies and articles researching and discussing the benefits of music.  These are a good read and worth looking at.

VH1 Save the music is committed to keeping music education in the nations public school system.  They host concerts and events to help raise money for the cause.  The site also has some great resources to help you get involved.

The Gibson Foundation raises money to help with many causes from music education to environmental efforts including Music Rising which was founded by The Edge to help replace music instruments lost in Hurricanes Katrina and Rita

Mr. Holland’s Opus foundation helps to provide new and refurbished instruments to schools in need.  Since 1996 they have helped many schools and countless kids have a chance to enjoy the benefits of music.

The Music Cares program provides assistance for musicians in times of need whether it is a medical, financial or a personal emergency.

Of course donations of money are not the only means to help out.  Get connected with a local charity to see if you can donate you time and talent to help at an event.  I have played a a few charity events and they are a great experience.
